One of These Unions is Not Like The Other
1) Transport Workers Union
2) Soviet Union
3) American Civil Liberties Union
4) European Union
Okay, I cheated again. They're all practically the same. I guess #2 could be considered a valid answer, on the grounds that it no longer exists.
There's some interesting commentary over here on the current subway/bus strike in NYC, where they point out that the transit workers are essentially striking against people who need mass transportation - i.e. the blue collar New Yorkers who dont own cars and cant work from home. They are striking against people who are poorer than them, simply because they dont get enough "respect."
Oh. And they want to retire at 50.
Why do unions even exist anymore? I remember my first real job (working the 1-hour photo desk at a Rite Aid), I was filling out the tax paperwork, and I also had to sign up for some union for the priviledge of paying them 1% of my income every week.
Anyway, one of the commenters over at that site, someone made a good suggestion - Governor Pataki should just say that he is going to fire 10% of the workers at random, every day until the strike ends. That would be a great idea.

if nothing more, the 'retiring at 50' thing makes me want to go and throw tomatoes at them
Thank you for not putting the United Auto Workers in there! :)
